Holidays in Benejúzar

In Benejúzar and the province of Alicante, in addition to the national and regional holidays, there are also specific local festivities that are important for the community. Here are some of the most important local holidays:
  • Fiestas Patronales de la Virgen del Rosario

    Date: Early October
    Meaning: This is the most important festival in Benejúzar, in honor of the patron saint of the village, the Virgen del Rosario. The festival includes religious ceremonies, parades, fireworks, and various cultural and recreational events. The highlights are often the processions in which the image of the Virgen is carried through the streets.
  • Semana Santa (Holy Week)

    Date: Falls in March or April each year, depending on Easter
    Meaning: In Benejúzar, as in many other Spanish cities and towns, Semana Santa is celebrated extensively with processions and religious celebrations. Holy Week commemorates the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
  • Romería de San Isidro

    Meaning: This festival is in honor of San Isidro, the patron saint of farmers. Traditionally, the inhabitants of Benejúzar make a pilgrimage (romería) to the countryside, often on horseback or in decorated wagons, and organize a day of festivities.

    Meaning: Feast day in honor of Saint Joseph, the patron saint of carpenters and father figures.
  • Las Hogueras de San Juan (St. John's fires)

    Date: June 20-24
    Meaning: This is the biggest festival in the city of Alicante and is held in honor of the summer solstice. Festivities include the burning of large cardboard and wooden statues (hogueras), parades, fireworks displays, and traditional dress.
  • Moros y Cristianos

    Date: Dates vary by city, but are usually held in the summer
    Meaning: This is one of the most famous celebrations in the province of Alicante and commemorates the battle between the Moors and Christians during the Reconquista. The celebrations include colorful parades, battle simulations and grand costumes. Cities such as Alcoy and Villajoyosa have famous Moros y Cristianos celebrations.
  • Fiestas de la Virgen del Remedio (Feast of the Virgen del Remedio)

    Date: August 5
    Meaning: This festival is celebrated in honor of the Virgen del Remedio, the patron saint of the city of Alicante. There are religious ceremonies and cultural events, including a procession in honor of the Virgen.
  • Día de la Comunidad Valenciana

    Date: October 9
    Meaning: Celebration of the autonomy of the Valencian Community, which includes the province of Alicante. This day commemorates the capture of the city of Valencia by King Jaime I in 1238 and is accompanied by local festivities, including cultural events and fireworks displays.

    Meaning: International Day in Honor of the Labor Movement.
  • Assumption of Mary (Asunción de la Virgen)

    Meaning: Celebration of the Assumption of Mary into heaven.
  • National Holiday of Spain (Fiesta Nacional de España)

    Date: October 12
    Meaning: Celebration of the discovery of America by Columbus in 1492. It is also called "Día de la Hispanidad".
  • All Saints Day (Día de Todos los Santos)

    Date: November 1st
    Meaning: Commemoration of all saints and the deceased. Traditionally, people bring flowers to graves.
  • Immaculate Conception (Inmaculada Concepción)

    Date: December 8
    Meaning: Celebration of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary.
